IC1318 Gamma Cygni Nebula - comprising the Butterfly Nebula, LDN 889 and B343 - 1250 pixels

Km. 101, East Negev Desert, Israel

Canon XSi, modded, Total RGB 38 min. = 19x2 min, ISO 800
Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Telephoto Lens, EQ6 mount, guided w/PHD and EQMOD

This is an interstellar gas cloud that emits light in Ha - making for a very "red" image. My friend Yossi Choury - a 30 years astrophotography veteran, highly renowned for his achievements in our local community - calls these "Ferrari red nebulae".

It was stunning to see how void is this image in the green and blue channels - absolutely nothing shows...

The Butterfly Nebula (IC 1318) comprises the two brighter parts just to the left of the bright central star Sadr (Gamma Cygni). The dark nebula (my recent favorite subject...) LDN 889 is clearly visible against the red nebulous backdrop on the upper right side of the image, while the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888, C27, Sharpless 105) is visible on the lower left side of the image (The Crescent Nebula can be seen on this site here: http://www.pbase.com/boren/image/112257149).

This image is a joint effort by my good friend and colleague Kfir Simon http://www.pbase.com/tango33). Kfir shot this image using my modded XSi and his 200mm F2.8 Canon lens, when I was stranded in Munich during the Volcano Ash Cloud flights shutdown. Being able to do some processing despite my absence had a good effect on easing the pain :)
