The plan today was to visit Kanangra Main- something described in the guidebook as "the ultimate experience". And it's not too far from the truth- the first 3 abseils are down a 150m waterfall! Unfortunately recent rains saw the water level far too high for our intended trip- attempting it would have been suicidal. Instead we opted for Dione Dell, which has a much smaller catchment area, so less water. It was still fairly pounding down here as well...
Dione Dell has 4 abseils, but they also have the advantage that you can bypass them all. We had to do so on the second abseil, as the original anchor tree had collapsed, and the alternative went straight through the torrent- Michael descended and described it as "the worst abseil he's ever done" so wisely we scrambled down on the right. The 3rd abseil was easily the highlight of the trip. From the final drop we followed the creek down to Margaret falls where lunch was had. No abseiling this drop today, as it's 110 meters... a steep climb from here takes you to the plateau, and some amazing views before battling the scrubby heath on the way back to the car. What a day!
