Chinese New Year, Sydney 2006

The 29th February was the first day of the Year of the Dog- woof! We headed into Sydney's chinatown to our favourite dim sum restaurant, then had a bit of a wander around checking things out- as did thousands of others... it was pretty packed!

The lion dancer, accompanied by drummers visits businesses. heads of lettuce are hung outside to entice the lion, which cavorts around the yard, eats the lettuce, spits it out, and then eats a red envelope, provided by the business owner. The dance is a symbol that the lion has scared away evil spirits and brought good luck to the home.

The firecrackers were incredibly noisy, I had the camera held at arms length and my finger in the ear pointing towards them! You can see most other people doing the same...
