Galapagos Landscapes

The Galapagos Islands were created millions of years ago by tectonic plate movements which forced the tips of volcanoes upwards. The Islands consist therefore almost entirely of volcanic lava and ash. In some cases, the presence of minerals gives the ash a characteristic colour.
The last volcanic activity was recorded on the Island of Isabella in 1995.
