Yes, the smoothing was deliberate. Due to the low light conditions at this night race, I had to set my camera to it's highest ASA setting. This made the picture more than a little noisy. I employed a filter called Neat Image and set the noise correction to an agressive setting. I liked what it did to the distracting chain link fences which are largely unavoidable at this race track.
