Butterflies, Moths etc: Macro Insects 2012 - 2016

The images below were captured with Olympus E-P1, EP-2 or an Olympus OM-D EM-5 digital cameras and a non-AI (circa 1968) Micro-Nikkor Auto, 55mm (macro) f 3.5 manual focus lens, or a Tamron 90mm f2.8 AF macro lens (1:12) or more recently a Micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro lens). I also used a Nikon D200 and now use a D7000 camera with Nikkor AF 300mm f4 lens, or the Micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro lens. The 55mm Micro-Nikkor lens or the Micro Nikkor lens can mounted be mounted on the mirrorless bodies with a Kipon NIK-m4/3 adapter. Using this 55mm lens makes an image equivalent to a 110 mm macro lens (1:2) on the E-P1 body. The Micro Nikkor 105 90mm is equivalent to an f2.8 200 mm (1:1) macro on the Olympus mirrorless bodies. It is a challenge shooting with these combos, and I recommend the use of a tripod, as the 5x magnification utility on the camera makes it difficult to hand-hold and get the focus dead-on. Still, as you will see, the effort is worth it. I use the 300mm f4 mostly for bird photography, but it can produce some nice results for butterflies as well.
