The Northern Shrike is a song bird that eats small song birds and over-winters at BESP.

This individual is a juvenile, as the narrow facial mask over the eye, is gray and not black. Also, the light brown wash along its sides will be gone, and the breast streaking will be less pronounced, with a white background. The gray on the top of head and on the back will be darker and contrast more with the whitish breast when this bird migrates north in the spring.
