At age 16 Oehmsen enlisted in the German Waffen SS toward the end of World War II and was sent to the eastern front. Oehmsen and his buddies were captured by the Americans at war's end, and immediately were turned over to the Russians. Oehmsen spent 32 hellish months in Soviet Slave Labor Camps. His family and childhood sweetheart, Annagret, were convinced that he was dead.
