frost flower

Weldon Springs Conservation Area, Missouri view map

This is the first time I had seen one of these and I was excited to take a shot on them. They occur after the first hard frost of the winter. For certain plants the cold forces the water from the stems out. One get extruded ribbons of frozen sap which curl up making these "flowers". They don't last very long, the sun melts them very fast so it is very rare to see them.

Beautiful capture Robert. I've never seen these before and wouldn't have known what it was except for your excellent description..
