Skeleton Coast, Swakopmund & Walvis Bay

Swakopmund, on the coast of Namibia, enjoys a cool climate, in striking contrast to the hot inland deserts, brought about by the Benguela current flowing out of the Antarctic. An unpleasant effect is persistant periods of coastal fog. The city was founded by German colonists and retains a strong German flavor, which some say is more German than Germany.

Magic, magic pix! Did you go far north enough to see if there's anything left of the Dunedin Star, which went aground during World War 11? If there is, should be something like the skeleton of the German liner, Eduard Bohlen, which went ashore off the coast in 1909.

This realy brings back fond memories! I grew up in Swakopmund and left in 1973 but still misses this beautiful town. This site made me realise that time is not standing still and that I should return to my roots soon. This is a fantastic site!

Hi I used to stay in Usakos in the 70s and go to Swakop for a break from the heat about once a month. You photos brought back many happy memories of the area. I used to look forward to the view of Spitskoppie on the road to Swakop. I took loads of photos myself but unfortunately they have all faded to an orange colour now. Thanks for putting the photographs on the net. Jack
