Thanks a lot for these excellent photos. My name is Mahdi Jwini. I lived in Bukha for four years, I left in 2005. The people there (Shuhuh and others) are very kind. I wish I could return to Musandam as a tourist. Best regards to Shuhuh and all Musandam people.

I Would like every body to Know that the Money which was sent To Mohammed Al Malik (The Crook from Dubai)Who his supposed to be the Sheikh of Bukha. As been payed back. Not by Mohammed but by Mike who it was given to here in the UK. I took Mike to Court here in the UK after waiting Two years for my money back. He was sent to prison for Six Months here in the UK for Fraud and Deception. Your Sheikh is a crook and has kept the £100000.00 which was sent to him for a business Venture and as let a man go to prison for his own Gain.. If this is the sort of people you have in Bukha i wont be Going There. So beware all you Travellers dont do business with the Arabs check them out first.
Even there Sheikhs are Crooks.

I have read your story about this Mohammed. Also i live in Dubai and many people know this gentleman. we know what he did to you and your friends is very wrong but please do not think we are all the same in Dubai.
If this man is a good person he will return all your money in due course.. Under shari'a law this man must return your money or If we reflect upon the wisdom of Allah (God) Almighty and His mercy in the punishment for who steals (which is for his hand to be cutoff). The wisdom in that is that Allah (God) wants for people success in the hereafter by going into Paradise, such that the hand that a person uses to steal with would cause him to go into Hell, so it is better for a person who steals to live in this short life without it rather than going into Hell because of it. This testifies to the truthfulness of the following words of the Almighty in the Noble Qur'an (Allah (God) knows and you know not).

Also when a person knows that the punishment for stealing is the hand being cut, then a person who is thinking of stealing would think so much before carrying out what he wants. This would result in the abolishment of the crime of theft in socities.

From another aspect, a person who steals once is more likely to steal again, such that when this person thinks of stealing again and sees the site of the cut in his forearm then this would refrain him from stealing again.

So Mike wait if this man is true to Islam he will return your money....InshaAllah.

I am very sorry to hear this man Mohammed Al Malek has taken money off you and Friends. I am a member of the Shihuh. When i first read your story i was happy that the shihuh were being remembered and you were fighting for our side... But this man as Shamed us again just like his family before him Shamed and Betrayed the shihuh. Its about time the AlMalek Family stopped making problems for other people. If you need to complain i know the Oman Goverment would be interested in your Story. Also he has a brother Saif who is a wali for Oman does he know the problems this man has caused you..In Islam we do not allow this to be done to a friend.

Dear Mr Mike and everybody involved with this Mohammad Al Malik from Dubai.. I know this person and his family from Zabheel, I can not believe he as taken money off you and not returned it. In our islamic law this is wrong and should be punished.. Mr Mike and the others should report this to the local police dept..I know this man was in trouble before with one english man for taking money off people. Persians, Portoguese, British all of them asked the help of some Omani tribes to control some parts of Oman.
BTW, Persia, England and Portugal couldn't occupied the interior areas of Oman. The british army failed to control the interior side of Oman. After the betrayal of the Imam the whole country was under the rule of the Sultan (British Follower).


Go read some history.

I agree with you everything in the middle east was done by UK, especially UAE cause its nothing but an Omani area. I'm sorry Frank living in the 70s won't change anything. Oman still a great country especially in East Africa.

England wasn't very strong before 16th Century.
I strongly believe Oman was one of the greatest countries in the middleeast between 16-18th century.

Go throw my Maps in the Ocean. you will still find Oman in any old Map in the world.

Hello Khaled.. I am Tony i wrote that about mohamed.. The story is a friend Of mine went to Dubai from the UK and became friends with this man.. Back last year in August he phoned me up and told me this Mohamed had a Topaz for sale which was worth two million dollars. He was with this Mohamed when he phoned me and said he needed money for a business venture which involved getting this mohamed,s land back from Oman but needed money urgent until the Topaz was sold. He sent me pictures of this topaz also a valuation for the topaz. Also i have a load of paper work which is more than a Hundred years old saying this Al malik family were the rulers of this Musandam area before the British got involved signed by all different Sheikh,s also a copy of a letter from William Waldergrave on behalf of the British goverment.I then spoke to this Mohamed who promised me between three and Five percent on my money every Month until he could sell this Topaz.. Stupid Here beleived everything because i trusted Mike who was a good friend of mine.. For the first three months i had my three percent then nothing to this day. I have spoke to this Mohamed a few times by phone but he will not send my money back i have emailed and he just ignore,s me. Also Mike is to ashamed to speak to me because he told me this mohamed was a good man and he trusted him with is life. Also Mike is in deep Debt because he gave this man money as well. As you can see by the stories below all this was written by Mike but this Mohamed was the story teller. I dont know if anything he says below is the Truth but this man used this story to con me and my friend out of One hundred thousand pounds which was sent to this mans account in Dubai

I do know the one of the old ruling families of Bukha - I am sure my friends father would be interested in in Tony's story - of being made a fool out of by a family, which might not even have any power in this area - Dr Ommar Bin Suliman - would be a great source for your complait. Why were you involved and giving your money into a non buisness venture??? I have contacts who want to set up real buiness in that area?

Dear Ihatbs i have been following this dicussion with interest.. I note on your map Oman own all of the UAE in the 6th Century. Why does it not have any claim to it now.. I was a serving officer in the Middle east in 1970 and i know that Oman were lap dogs to the british.. it was The british who divided up the UAE and your so called Oman and decided who ruled where.. So dont make out Oman is this great power. It done what the British told it to do.. Who do you think put Qaboss in power and trained him in the UK.. Yes us British and who do you think put all the other sheikhs in power like Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan yes the British.. Remember the Trucial States yes each region had its Ruling Sheikh. I served with the British Army there from 1968 until 1971 Under Col Stuart Carter in our headquarters in Sharjah our prime minster then was Edward Heath who came there and visted the Gulf to decide if we were to leave or not. A lot of things went on in the Gulf which noboby cared about. the Emirates were Divided up into seven by the British and yes the Ruling Sheikh of the Musandam Region was removed from power by the British because the british needed to know 100% before it left the region that no problems would arise in the Shipping lanes in the Gulf and restrict access to the Oil which was coming to Britain.. So Bukha Kashab Dibba and the other regions which were ruled by the Al Malik Sheikh were taken off him because he could not be trusted.. Remember I WAS THERE so throw your map away it means nothing. You have one person to thank for where Oman is today EDWARD HEATH and the Brtish Army

I would like every body to know that poor Mike as been Hood winked and lied to regarding Bukha and Musandam By the Al Malek Family who live in Dubai in a place called Zabheel.. He became a friend of these people who told him to make trouble for Oman and they would return Great wealth to him instead these people stole money of him and me and will not return it. I thought Muslims were trusting people and they Honoured there contracts.. but this Mohamed Al Malek is a Cheat and a Crook. He does not care if is money is Haram. I hope he and is family and all his friends read this and shame him into given the money back he stole £100000.00 Also i have all the paper work that was given to mike to make him think what this Mohamed was telling him was the Truth.. May be some one from the Omani Embassy would be interested to find out what this man was planing in the UK and the trouble he wanted to cause. He should be taught a lesson

Very interesting comments. Oman has some very interesting history. Perhaps I am wrong, but I rather thought that both the fort at Khassab and the one at Bukha were built by the Portugese. Pre oil it was rather difficult to actually travel around and I believe that allegiances shifted rather a lot. Nontheless, Oman and its trading empire has a history and that can't really be compared to that of the UAE/the Trucial States, who until they got oil were pretty much a bunch of camel traders and date growers with a few pearls thrown in. Its not for nothing that Omanis are often referred to as the 'Gentlemen of the Gulf'. The Musandam heights are a beautiful place and the Shihu a generous and warm people.

I love the pictures.I first visited Masandem in 1992 when I was the only girl{then}amongst a group of 10 men from the natural history group from Al Ain, scaling the Hajar mountains.It was really tough keeping up with them but I made it.On the way I saw the most stunning scenery ever.A couple of weeks later I went back on a camping trip,addicted to the scenery.When my sister and friend came to visit later on ,they were forcefully taken there in a rented car.The car was hastily returned to the car rental company when the employees were sleeping for fear the car would be inspected for damage.
In march I am returning to Khorfakkan for a week.I have never been to Khasab and would dearly love to return to the mountains of Musandem.If anyone has any information on local walking groups I'd greatly appreciate your tips.

Mike i read with interest your knowlege of Bukha and the surrounding Areas. You are 100% right in what you say regarding Oman taking Bukha by Force. I am of the AL-Shohouh Tribe and although it is before my time my Family tell me That Oman with its costal Force and with the help of the British Army did use Military force against our people to remove the local Sheikh and put him in prison. Why only Allah knows. Yes Bukha Fort was built by the Al-Malek Family who should be ruling Bukha now. I believe this family now lives in Dubai. Bukha is now rich in Oil and Gas and also is being stripped of its stone and slate by Oman. Maybe one day this family will be put back in power and all the Al-Shohouh Tribe will benefit from there Land. These people who rule our land now are not true to the faith of Islam and they pray falsely to Allah. They deceive Allah and those who believe them only deceive themselves. All in the name of Greed

Sorry i have not replied to your Comments, but i have just returned from Bukha. Ask Mr Moosa Who Built Bukha Fort. I know it was not Oman. This fort was built for the ruling Sheikh Who ruled this area. The family was the Al Malek Family. Where is this family now. I know that when these people resisted the invasion of there land in 1970, By the British and the coast of oman force, they were put in prison. Do you see any mention of this in your history books. Also reading some of the other peoples comments i believe they know what i am talking about...?

Mike, from my very limited knowledge of Omani history Mr Moosa appears to be correct in all of his statements. Detailed histories of Oman in English do not appear to be readily available yet on the internet but there are a few sites giving some useful background supporting Oman’s claims to Musandum before 1970. Ian Skeet’s ‘Muscat and Oman, the End of an Era’ gives a good overview of Oman’s history up to 1970 with a very well documented reference list supporting his writings. I would be very pleased to hear from Mike, Mr Moosa and Guest if any of you want to contact me directly; Oman still maintains its fascination for me, and my Musandum period has my best memories.

Mike should stop flaunting around his sheer ignorance on the above issue. Musandam is Oman's and had been so for centuries. A few unauthenticated letters from disgruntled sheiks will not change the fact musandam belong to Oman. Mike has very little grasp on the entire issue. Best thing for him to do is refrain from dabbling in local issues which is none of his business.

I hope u dont jump on History,u must read full history of OMAN,since 1500 years ago,,,,OMAN is great country its borders was up to Qatar,,,and even Bahrain,Basra,Shiraz,Bandar Abbas was under OMAN rule......what u say by short MUSANDAM,,,was under OMAN,,the last war with HAJJAJ bin YOUSEF from BASRA was fought in MUSANDAM,,,and HAJAJ army was defeated,,,,the OTTOMAN EMPIRE was trying to occupy OMAN from MUSANDAM,,,and was failed......please read the full history of OMAN,,,,for last 300 years all GULF was under OMAN.......

I have spent the last two years in Musandam speaking to the people of this area. who tell me that musandam does not belong to Oman.These people have showed me orignal documents. some over 100 years old. Which proves Oman never had any claim to musandam before 1970. It had been ruled by its own Sheikh. I also am in touch with the Sheikh who should be ruling this land. Sultan Qaboos knows who these people are. Very soon i will have my own website where everybody can read or download all documents. Then you can make your own minds up. Watch this space for website

These are not hysterical comments they are made on pure fact. Sultan Saeed Bin Taymour, who ruled Oman before Qaboos states that it belongs to the Al-Shohouh Tribes who have for centuries ruled this land with their own Sheikh. Also note that before 1970 any visiting Sheikh would ask permission, by letter, to the ruling Sheikh of the land to enter. I have examples of these letters from the last ruling Sheikhs of UAE, Muscat and numerous other Arab states to prove this fact, so I suggest that you brush up on your history! All will be proven soon.

Very interesting. I lived in Bukha in 1976-77 putting in the first water supply there. The sea came up to the fort ruins at high tide in those days. It looks like the house I lived in has gone, it was somewhere in the view up the coast from Fort Qala. I used to buzzed by ravens whenever I tried to look around Fort Qala. There were no roads, everything went by boat, over the hills or along the beach at low tide. The road started going in in 1982. Necessary, but unfortunately some beautiful little beaches have been lost.

Visited Musandam and the UAE last week - did the Dhow trip from Khasab ... only 5 Germans for us. Great pictures - brought back memories of the trip. Did you see the rock carvings near Khasab ... very impressive in a fantastic wadi.

On the scuba side - did some snorkiling around snoopy Island between Dibba and Fujairah. Very good. Bet the scuba diving is unbelievable!
