(From Peter N-H on Thorntree) This is one of the two most significant passes leading to Beijing from the north (the other is Gubeikou) and was probably fortified well before Beijing even existed. What you see here is the single most expensive reconstruction project in Chinese history, finished in 1997. Prior to that the lower sections of the Wall here were little more than a stripe along the ground. It's a complete rebuild.
