People are people... The satisfaction of human creates by human itself... I do believe that any places to go you have to move and adjust on what the tradition and beliefs of any race... Sometimes i used to think of racial discrimination but when i stepped my foot in UAE gives me a strong point of view that law is a law... My stay here give am an ampule sight for a good reason on how to be more creative and independent... to survive to make a living... which strongly benefits to my career and status life.

How utterly sad and wasteful it all is, almost as bad as seen in the USA, Europe, Japan and now also in China. This madness is indicative of the downward spiral in respectfulness to the environment and life in general. Whilst the world is riddled with huge problems that need sorting out, there is this obsession to waste resourcesm whilst destroying natural features. Can you imagine the damage being done to the sea floor?

Being a Native American and one of the Original peoples of North America, and having many friends from Dubai, I believe that UAE is doing a great thing in building more industrial areas. Many Americans are now working in Dubai and feel right at home. Why is it that many people are always opposing great ideas? Why is it that some people always have to have a negative idea? If its anyone that forced people to adapt to other cultures and religions, its the Europeans. My native people were told to become Christians or be killed. Now tell me WHO is the bad? BTW.. I love Dubai and its people.

its very sad some of you think that way of Dubai, as UAE citizen I would say that there is no place on earth welcoming non citizen to their home like the way in Dubai, i have read lots of the comment written here, I have to agree that some people appreciate the life standard here and some are not, but people should know that Dubai Airport is located withen the city and the coast of the Taxi journey is not expensive. so if you don't like it just leave its your choice. I have done my study in the US and i have appreciated every minutes i lived there and always heared similar comments about US and would alway say if you don't like it just leave. no one force you to stay in place you don't appreciate.

Dubai is an amazing phenomenom which is really a bubble building to burst. If the middle east does not calm down they will just be bypassed as they have been for the past 1000 years. Who needs them and for what? Do they produce anything? Do they grow anything? They are overbuilding in the middle of the desert for who? Once the oil runs out who are they kidding? I think its amazing that Iran supports the Dubai, UAE. The president of Iran was just here in NY telling us how bad our godless, sex filled, gay country is and here he is meeting and investing in Dubia. Dubia looks to be a bigger Las Vegas including the night clubs and prostitution. How could this be supported by Islam. Amademajad wants everybody to be under islam rule following islam sharia law. Under this rule woman would not have the right to dance at nightclubs and walk around not covered up. I know Dubai seems like a great place but I think if you look deeper...Dubai is in step with Iran and shares the same goal of taking over the world. I think Dubai is just acting friendly to the west attracting american businesses and visitors so that one day when islam rules the world Dubai will be its financial center. Thats how radical islam is spread...through slow deliberate actions. One day we will all be hitting our knees praying to Allah with our woman covered up....how great would that be. WAKE UP!!!! Dubai could be a great thing for America if its not having its strings pulled by Amademajad. So far I question the real motives of the UAE. All the more reason we need to win in Iraq and establish a democracy....this will pressure Iran and hopfully knock over Iran's regime. One day we could see a more democratic middle east and Dubai may be a great force to keep advancing freedom. We will see how it plays out.

DUBAI - The great new city for the intellect people of this world! DUBAI - Most of the people of the United States do not know of this great gem, when they ask where DUBAI is, they are turned off and do'nt give a dam where its at, and whats its history is. When i tell them where its at, THEY tell me to go jump in the lake....Yea, i know they are all tuned into there own thing and they muchless don'nt care much about the Middle East period. I would not bother tell'in them about this place called DUBAI anyhow, most of the people i know are not intellectally fit to talk or much less visit DUBAI, they would rather spend there time in our own backyard hell hole called Las Vegas. Anyhow i would like to share my thoughts on this great city called DUBAI, if i may, i hope you all find that there still are some of us americans out here who totalllly apreciate what the U.A.E is doing to build a new city for the intellectaul people of this world. My name is Todd Nelson and i am lucky to grow up in the United States of America, but lately should i say, the last 25 years some how our country HAS lost its core values. At one time we were told if you dont have the money to buy, then your not gettin it! NOT ANY MORE, now this country pays for its food with credit! We have gotten just plain rotten attitudes about everything, however people in this counrty are just begining to wake up and see just how dam spoiled we are. our country would rather waste our money on big houses we dont need, big cars, big boats, take out food every night. There is nothing wrong with owning these items if you have the cash to pay for them, but where we as a nation go wrong is, is that every american who is sixteen years or older thinks they have the right finance everything they want and that is where we really begin to screw up our economy! But its almost to late now that our economy is going down the toilet fast, and this time people are going to suffer for being stupid when they thought they could have it all. Anyway my point is a lot of you are going to think DUBAI is doing the same thing and that they are wasting money and resourses,....APSOLUTLY NOT, YOUR WRONG! You see our counrty failed big time in NOT putting money in our infrastructures like transpotation, roads, schools, buildings, everything THAT DUBAI is doing RIGHT! So when you read thruogh the rest of my written veiw keep in mind that i am coming from a america that most of the world dosnt see. An america whose roads and bridges are falling apart, AN america where most people who bought a house in the last two years with barly no money down, are lossing their houses. WHY? BECAUSE they ASUMED they would get a raise in their income when it was time to start paying towards their HUGE LOANS. Do not feel sorry for us one bit, we deserve it. Biggest problem we have is our roads, our roads and highways are falling apart at a rapid rate, and yet our taxpayers refuse to pay a little more at the gas pump to pay for the upgrades we so desperttly need. YEA, us Americans are selfish when it comes to our life styles and now we are in deep trouble for being a bunch of fools! This is why i want everybody to know what DUBAI is doing is perfecttly right, and i hope people start to seeing that they are teaching all of us where we shuold be spending our money. ARE WE ALL READY - FOR A NEW BEGINING? I SURE AM, ITS BEEN TOO LONG SINCE WE HAD THAT GOOD! Roughly 12,000 years ago there is a legend of a great world capital called ATLANTIS. Long ago the people of ATLANTIS had techknowlege that we could only dream of today. Legend has it that the city once huge and graceful was the home to many different people who shared knowledge from around the universe. One day the people started to disrespect their planet and adventally a terible earth changing advent happen, so some say, otthers say the people began to argue and then some how this amazing city called ATLANTIS was destroyed in just a few days. Many of the people fled this world to get away from the earth changes, others agreed to stay behind and maybe try a way to some how rebuild. Anyway most religions tell a simalar story, i not sure of what they are so don,nt hold me to this story. But what i do know is that they the people who stayed behind were told to be strong and rebuild if you can, at some time when the time is right they said they would return to help us completly rebuild of what once was destroyed. So what if the time of rebuiding is here, the time they were talking about, why dont we let DUBAI be our signal to them that we are ready for them to come back? What do you all say? It seems to me from all these AWESOME PICTURES of DUBAI that DUBAI has made a huge leap in to trying to rebuild what once was destroyed, i think its time we all stand up and applaud the people of U.A.E for a great job of showing the intire world its time for us, ALL OF US, to get back to business at hand of rebuilding this world better THAN EVER exscpeciallay since now we have no choice because the sun has dramatically gottin briter and hotter wich ofcourse is melting our ice caps at the polor regions at a rate we are shocked to see. So here we are a chance of a lifetime to get behind DUBAI and support their efforts in building a brand new city for this entire world to learn from...GOD knows all of the cities in america and around the world need new techknowlegde to survive the coming of the solor storms - power outages / crops drying up / water shortages. WOW EVEN MY KIDS WOULD RATHER SPEND TIME HERE INSTEAD OF - DISNEY WORLD! IMAGINE - a brand new city with the worlds largest airport or how about the worlds largest medical center with a 28,000 bed trama one hosptal that would combine medical universities from all around the world to treat every conditon known to man. Imagine this medical center being the largest structure in the world staffed with tens of thousands of doctors rotating their time there to treat patients from around the world who some have insurance and some that dont. It is a place in this world where it wont matter who you are, your getting help from the best doctors in the world. How about the largest college in the world where every student in the world will at least have an ability to spend a year studying their major totally or almost free. How about a city where children from all around will come for a few months on a class feild trip to study every language in the world. How about a huge space center that also houses a large university for high school kids to prepare themselves for a career in space. Right here right now is the place to make this happen where this can be the central of everything good that can happen when we put are minds together. The whole intire persian gulf could be transformed in to a world wide meca for health, education, science, music, and ofcource vacationing...AWESOME! I beleive in a few years DUBAI will be the finacial capital of the world and if thats going to be the case then all the people of the world should put their finaces together and lets help this intire area become an example of what a intire world can do when we work together instead of letting one small counrty having to do it all on there own. DUBAI can be that city, a city that will embrace every possibility known to man. No where in this world better than DUBAI to build such a huge city. A place a child can dream about and also patisapate in its future even at an early age, instead of only reading about. When i was youg i use to dream about a place like this and now after discoverying DUBAI, i think this would be the perfect place for this worlds first WORLD CITY. A place where dreams come true no matter who you are, you will be able to come and be part of history in the making...DUBAI. After seeing for myself what the people of the UAE have done so far i would'nt be surprised to see a 28,000 bed trama/teaching hosptal in their future plans. Not only do i believe that they can be the worlds largest vacation meca, but also the worlds largest finacial/healthcare/medicalfacilities/areospace/educational/ you name it, i believe they can do it! FINNALLY A REASON TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT OUR PLANETS FUTURE! For years when i was youger than i am today, i use to have dreams of a place i thought was heaven. A place where there was hundreds of small islands surronding a jewell of a city made of blue class and colorful granite. A place where there was no hunger, pain and no misery. I never thought this place ever would exsist on this planet. I looked everywhere and could not find this place that i thought was heaven. Years went by and suddenlly it appeared out of no where, thare she was on our own planet, no not on a far off world, but hear, RIGHT HEAR! O, thank you GOD! you do exsist! How else would those beutifull images come into my head when i was much younger than i am today, unless they were given to me as a gift. a gift that was going to give me a reason to live when i was down on my luck. A dream to hold onto, a gift from GOD, telling me that yes someday will come, a someday that will take all my fear, pain and doubt away. And now thanks to people who really care about what they believe in and knowing any dream can and will come true as long as you continue to believe in your dream and persist to make it a reality, no matter what stands in your way! The Crown Prince of UAE, thank YOU! more than you know for bringing your dream and my own dream of this place to reality. People, people dont you all see how awsome this is, workers rights? this world never had workers rights from the begining, so stop with the nonsense, everybody has to understand that without cheap labor all of us would still be living in caves like 6,000 years ago. There will be a time when this entire world will be done with construction and then we all can lay down under a palm tree and rest and injoy of what we have all worked so hard to build! Anyway lets all stand up and thank the people of Dubai for reminding us that our true voyage is to all get allong and work together to build this planet into a great place for future souls to visit, ethier by spaceship or birth! This city is a good example of what other cities look like on other worlds, its time to show the universe that we too are ready to take our spot at the table. There is a great deal of money being made. I have no problem with this. However, if you examine how that money is made, you will find abundant evidence showing it is not "under the rules and guidelines of Allah." The U.A.E. and other Islamic countries are making money by transforming themselves into the image of the west. Everything about Dubai is western in nature. From shopping malls and indoor skiing, to Disneyland (Dubai Land) and practically nude women on the beaches. There is virtually no difference between what Dubai is attempting to become and what the corrupt western countries already are. How can any true Muslim honestly defend what is happening in Dubai and other Muslim countries? Trying to build the tallest building in the world, indeed! It all smacks of huge egos and corrupt principles not found in true Islam.

Most muslims don't understand islamic economics based on authentic sources. There is nothing, and i repeat nothing wrong with making money and its explicitly encouraged in the Quran and the Hadeeth. Most muslims have been fooled into thinking that Islam is somehow quasi communist, or socialist. Islam is neither capitalist nor socialist in its economic outlook. It is free market but based on the Shari'a of Islam. This means you can make as much as you want but under the rules and guidelines Allah has laid down.

I live in America (Chicago) and I consume my fair share of news. From local to national news programs, to newspapers and magazines, I'm sorry to report that Americans are not even aware of Dubai. Nothing against Dubai, but Americas in general are concerned primarily with themselves. World events are discussed and shown, but at a rather low level. As to a little gulf state like the U.E.A., people are just not that interested. I am definitely in the minority with it comes to Dubai. I love the place because I love skyscrapers. Dubai rocks with it comes to architecture and supertalls. Once Burj Dubai is completed more people will start learning about Dubai, but until till then, Americans will continue to debate illegal workers south of our border, not worker rights in Dubai. Personally I am saddened by what Dubai is doing. Islam has always resisted the ways of western culture. Now over night, is seems Dubai and other Islamic countries are embracing capitalism and the culture of the west. I understand the rulers of Dubai must build an economy beyond petroleum, but encircling the ideals of the west will only weaken and ultimately destroy the values of our own culture and religion. I love this website! I haven't visited for some time now and I�m excited by all the new photos and of course the laughable comments. Some of you really live depressing lives though. How do you get through the day knowing there is such horrible atrocities in the world like little Dubai? Oh the inhumanity and the horrendously evil ways of Dubai for desiring to transform its economy from oil to tourism. Such waist, such hubris, how dare they build large and fascinating projects to attract tourist. Why its all so scandalous! (For some of you like Jose, the above commentary is called sarcasm). Speaking of Jose Palmieri (thanks for your full name), you seem to be a particularly delightful fellow. Question Jose, have you ever actually been to Disneyland? It�s a pretty nice place really. If most cities could be run as clean and efficiently as Disneyland then the world would be better off. In fact I (and most people of the world) would probably rather live in a Disneyland type city rather than the over crowed, over polluted, dirty cities we have around the globe today. If Dubai is trying to model itself in the image of Disneyland, well then great for them. That is actually a brilliant idea the more I think about it. A clean, exciting, fun, well-organized city to work and play. What a novel concept. Go Dubai! First of all, the photos are fantastic. Great job, Brian! However, I find these megaprojects shockingly disgusting and appalled that not only do most of the comments see nothing wrong with these absurd fabrications, but celebrate them. Some even calling Dubai paradise on earth. Sure, if your idea of paradise is living in Disneyland. Let's face it, as human beings we're ALL out of touch with reality. For the simple reason that we use concepts, and more often than not we get carried away by them. Away from reality. The clinical definition is psychosis. Once you know this, you are less likely to be tossed away by your own mind and more likely to walk lightly on the earth. It's been said countless times before, but happiness is not to be found outside of yourself. But even after hearing this we don't believe it and persist in our crazy ways. From Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu: The rich make like intolerable, driving themselves in order to get more and more money which they cannot really use. In so doing they are alienated from themselves, and exhaust themselves in their own service as though they were slaves of others. Well, I truly am glad that the Asian countries are prospering and that the lower-than-average citizens will not have to leave their respective countries to find a better future. Lots of expats, especially Indians and Pakitanis, have the habit of finding fault and complaining about many aspects or policies of the foreign country that they reside in. Their homeland is considered to be the best place on earth and they would never admit that they're so much better off wherever else than their birthplace, even though it is quite frank that the reason they're in a foreign country in the first place, is because of the fact that they're not able to make ends meet in their country of origin. I can very well guarantee you that the lower-class workers and populace are treated with no respect and dignity in their own country and, considering their OWN caste systems, the Arab "segregation" seems more logical. A seperation of class has, and always will exist. Many people, including me, would prefer living in a "silly city nation state" (whatever it actually means!) than an unwieldy, over-populated city with dodgy infrastructure. Please look at the amount of Indians populating other countries all around the world, whether they are new immigrants or fourth generation citizens. Yes, the "lazy" Arabs, as you have named, have lead a life of luxury after the oil boom and reserves of money were at their disposal to be splashed on lavish and expensive items and projects. If you would kindly bother reading some financial material, you may come accross the fact that the Arabs have: (i) Seriously curbed their expenses and set up successful stores of money for the rainy day; (ii) Have set up other pojects to diversify their income so that oil is not the only main source; (iii) have set up schemes to intergrate locals back into the workforce of the country, like Saudisation; and (iv) have produced one of the most influencial businessman, merchant families and region. Oil currently accounts for only 6% of the total GDP of the Emirate of Dubai, so your claim that they're going back to the ancient days after the oil reserves dry out is somewhat without proper logic. :) I think the comments that Guest made about the difference between "other" Arabs and Gulf Arabs is a strong point (thank you!), in the sense that most foreigners who visit a Gulf country or view Arabs from a distance do not know enough to diffrentiate between a Khaleejy/Gulf guy walking on the stret or a Lebanese guy. Hence, if a first or second generation Arab, who is NOT a local but speaks Arabic, has to offend another expat, the victim may not know the difference and generalize. I do not, however, deny the fact that many local Arabs are arrogant, but as I said before, a seperation of classes will always exist, and a nobleman smelling of expensive Oud on his spotless white thoub would not generally want to mix with a worker with odd clothes and sweat on his brow. I respect every human being for who they are, and in many cases, a poor, shoddy lad would have a kinder heart than a well-dressed businessman, but the world at large, headed by the First World countries, does not consider this, so why then are we picked upon? The scenario that Guest has mentioned about expats earning respect in another country (in terms of wealth and a fairly luxurious way of life) and thereafter forgetting their humble roots, also applies to the Asian workers living in most parts of the world today. It is amazing to note that there are strong Indian communities in almost EVERY part of the world, and many of them would not consider relocating back to India, despite its rapid economic growth!

i hope what benzene says works, and has a domino effect. What i like of the us method is that whatever said and done, they take much care of those who work and contribute to their economy. What they do with other countries to preserve their country and their peoples rights is questionable but most often they provide rights and a quality of life for even the labour class and still manage to make their country economically sucessfull. Reffering to what kallejey has to say..yes..we are discouraging our pople to go and work in such deplorable conditions in the gulf and the change has already started here. As our economy has picked up, most labor class people are finding better oppertunity with a more respectable lifestyle in their own homelands. And that will soon start to find its impact in the gulf. I would like to see a time when these lazy arabs will start working their ass out in the gulf and that time is not far away. Most of the asian counties are mush better off than before and counties like India are much greater and bigger economies than such these silly city nation states..:) in the gulf. I would like my kawneej fiend to reliase one thing that this boom will bust and sooon the oil will run dry and as another friend said its going to be soon back to the camel and dates life..:)

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and I want to thank everyone involved for posting excellent information regarding Dubai. I am a biochemist living in the US and have been considering an opportunity to take part in the inception of an occupational medicine infrastructure (alongside US medical doctors and other experts) within and between US companies working in Dubai. I have noticed (hard not to) that a very pervasive subject on this site is the treatment of workers. And let me be short, but frank -- any US company involved in the mistreatment of workers (regardless of worker origin) or involved in the obstruction of Human Rights will soon have an Occupational Health and advocacy team (similar to OSHA in the US) residing in Dubai that will be charged with the right and responsibility to monitor, govern, and report these issues immediately to US compliance entities. Personally -- I look very forward to this challenge and will gladly take part in bringing those in US firms to justice who take part in the above activities that all consider terribly outrageous.

Couple inferior building standards with wholly inadequate infrastructure in many areasa, particulary transort, high costs, and the whole thing is a huge bubble waiting to burst, as indeed all property booms do. All those petrodollars which are being ploughed into useless mega building projects should be put into provding a world class education for the locals (the state education system is deplorable in many cases) and a proper commercial/industrial base which does not rely on cheap labour.

Brian, I�d like to commend you on a fabulous job, and your pictures are amazing. Not only this gallery, but most of your pictures for the other countries too. I agree with the people who say that the Gulf countries are exploiting foreign workers, but I don�t like the sound of what notions some of you are implying. Here�s a suggestion: Since some of you are so concerned about the workers� living conditions, why not discourage the workers from coming in the first place? Why not inform the countries of origin? Yes, we know saying that India exploits its workers doesn�t justify Dubai to do so, but fact remains, living conditions are far better in the Middle East (as bad as they may be) than their countries of origin. Nobody is holding these people under duress; the Arabs aren�t pointing guns to their heads and forcing them to leave their families and live without aircons in a foreign country. I think anybody who isn�t pleased with conditions of another country should simply leave and move back to their home country, or alternatively seek asylum from another country. It is, after all, the home country�s responsibility to take care of her citizens. And foreigners coming to another country and demanding to change the laws, sounds absurd. What makes it sound even more absurd is the fact that their home countries are not the best examples of law and order. Somebody mentioned trying to discourage tourists from visiting Dubai or investors buying property in it. Suppose your theory of works, and you are successful in discouraging a significant number of people. This would lessen developments. Fewer developments and less advancement would practically halt the number of foreign workers flowing into the country. This would just add to the poverty of the Asian countries involved, as over 5 million Indians alone, are currently working or residing in the Arabian Gulf. And the reason that they are here is obvious: a better living. Most are aware of the conditions before making the decision to come to the Gulf, most have had at least one family member, friend or neighbour who has been or is currently in the Gulf. So why intentionally opt for a life of hardship and inferiority, when you can remain a citizen of your country of birth and be treated equally? The caste system in India, between Indians and Indians, outweighs the Middle Eastern segregation, for obvious reasons. Arabs are entitled to a little more authority since it is their land and since they have become a minority in their own country. It is also worthy to note that it is not Dubai, or the Government of Dubai, that is responsible for the low standard housing or any of the other accusations, but in fact the companies, employers or agents involved. Also, many �first world� countries, with their well-established democracies and infrastructure, continue to transgress basic human principles and consensual laws in many fields, either under another guise or by covering up, despite having perfected their respective countries in many other ways. It is therefore unfair to comment on a worker treatment policy of the UAE when, for example, USA finds it justifiable to go into another country, like Iraq, and decide the fate of her citizens. That too, is considered unethical. Bewildered, your comments are reasonable and well-said. You�ve made some strong points. :)

But this being a cosmopolitan state with many nationalities pitching in the progress of it, to disregard them is I feel not correct. Also when comparing to countries like India the amount of resources they have to the make a difference is quite huge and also the vastness and ever-expanding population of my country becomes a deterrent to any noteworthy progress. But as I said before no excuse is enough! But I disagree with a recent comment on the 100$ payment given by Ali. The guy who is earning much lesser than that in India, has a home to go to, a wife and children who can comfort his aching legs and love him. He is sacrificing all this to earn a better living for his family, but making him suffer so much when you have at least enough to provide him a decent life here, is all what I ask. Again I agree not all Arabs treat people badly. Actually I have known quite a few who are extremely courteous and kind and helpful to many. And yes�the blame is solely not upon Arabs, as here I have worked in an Indian company and have seen how first hand they exploit their own people. So no one is a saint here, I agree. But the point is can anyone make a change when one can afford it at least to some extent! When you have some to spare why not share! Why promote such disparity when the great religion of yours teaches you to exactly the opposite..to share and care. All I ask is a little not much..just a little. Guest. I guess Brians page is becoming kind off bloggy�his humongous efforts in photographing so much as bewildered said requires more comments than worldly matters. Definitely so, I think the effort of Brian is very worthy of praise as the patience of the man is highly admirable and the talent to do so also. Again the gesture of Brain in offering to take photos of the workers camps was indeed very honorable. I agree some of my comments were mostly than quite, overboard. I apologize for the same. But I was more upset than sensible when I wrote especially when I saw a note �and u guys plezzzzzz don�t interfere in UAE business�. That had really ticked me off and I who never normally bother to blog, did so�and quite mindlessly for that matter too. True the workers camps are not as bad as the concentration camps of the Nazis, but the people still suffer. And that sometimes when u have seen it first hand..hurts, be it of my nationality or of another. I was just trying to voice the pain I saw, which was propelled by the helplessness of not being able to do any good or make any difference. But at least talking about it creates an awareness which will some way domino into a change. I also agree with Bewildered�s mention of the conditions in India. It is true the government there is doing very little to improve the quality of life of its people. Today what little progress my country has made; I will only hold the sprit of the people and their hard work than the efforts of the government. Excuses can be many, but never pardonable and for that matter I disagree with those who run my country. Also, I actually admire a great extent to what the heads of the UAE Govt and their leaders like Sheikh Zaeidh or Sheikh Mohammad have done for the region. Their vision and efforts, if even a handful of my leaders had then maybe I would not have been here. As to grammar and spelling I was not specifically referring to you, but to just about everyone who has posted a remark. Yes that includes myself. Also, your English is fine regardless of it being your second language. It�s my first and I still have problems. Now if I may, I�ll take issue with a couple of your positions. Your most intriguing statement was this: �Today most civilized nations are trying to loose that evil past of theirs and strive towards building a more humane society.� There is a great deal of truth to this, but unfortunately underneath the surface abuse, subjugation, and exploitation continues in the world today. Governments are just better at concealing their darker deeds. Additionally, there are individuals and companies who still perpetrate such acts as well. In the case of Dubai, is blame solely on the heads of the government? Or do the companies who win the contracts hold any responsibilities? What of India where the majority of the workers come from? Should that government be held accountable to any degree? Are they not allowing these recruiters to sway workers to Dubai in the first place? It�s just too easy to naively assert Dubai holds absolute culpability. As Brain stated, �Some [companies] treat their workers properly. Others, like many other places in the world, do not.� Are all companies in India completely honorable and equitable in their dealings with employees? Do they pass out air conditioners so everyone can sleep in comfort? I don�t think so. The questions become this: To what level must the Dubai government regulate the construction industry within its borders? Also, to what level must India regulate the recruiters within her borders? If the treatment is so horrible in Dubai, why isn�t the Indian government doing anything to protect her people? Lastly, what standard of living must construction contractors provide their workers? To be honest I don�t have the answers to these questions. If conditions are as horrible as some report, then there is plenty of blame for everyone involved. Not just Dubai in general. Also I can�t help but wonder about the general conditions in India. If circumstances were more favorable in the homeland, then perhaps individuals would not be swayed to leave. Your attempt to equate worker conditions in Dubai with Jewish concentration camps in Germany is absolutely ridiculous. This is your weakest argument. Perhaps you are not familiar with WW II history, but as far as I know workers in Dubai are not systematically gassed to death by the millions. Nor surrounded by armed guards 24 hours a day. Nor are workers in Dubai ever denied payment. Yes waiting 6 to 8 months for payment is horrible, but not comparable to waiting 6 to 8 months only to be shot or gassed. How cares if the building dimensions are similar. Go to any army base in any country and you�ll find similar housing conditions. It is irresponsible to match worker camps in Dubai with the Jewish camps of Germany. I�m sure the situation is extremely unpleasant to say the least. I would be the first to complain if I were in the same circumstances, but I commenting from the viewpoint of an unbiased observer. Simply put, the working conditions in Dubai do not deserve the over-the-top condemnation you portray because there are other atrocities in other countries (civilized or not) that are much, much, worse. About the construction workers do they pay them more in their homeland or you just like to attack Dubai since they are Arab .If you want to solve the problem you have to start from the origin. Since I don�t think they pay them more than 100$ there.

This page gets a bit lively doesn't it? I've posted the only worker accomodation photographs I currently have on the last pages of the Palms gallery. They are aerial photos of the Palm Jumeirah labor camp which I took on commision for the camp's builder. The camp is located on one of the fronds as it would be a logistical nightmare getting so many workers on and off the Palm every day. The ship moored at the camp was brought in to house additional workers. My note on the topic would be that there are many, many companies in Dubai. Some treat their workers properly. Others, like many other places in the world, do not. It is odd that the low labor costs in Dubai are not in any way reflected in the real estate prices charged by the developers, which I find extremely high. If anyone can arrange access for me to other worker camps, I think it would be a worthwhile subject to photograph.

I would also appreciate to convey my point, if Brain would also post some of the picture of the living conditions of the workers who build these phenomenal wonders of modern architecture. Also a good idea would be to post pictures of the abuse of underage children and women brought to this city of wonders with promises of great job opportunities and comfortable lifestyle and then forced into prostitution for the benefit of the tourists that visit this great city. This would then provide the onlooker a fair point of view to choose from the great pleasure that this city provides and the great pain this city inflicts upon many.

If my friend were to take a trip to some of the workers camps in Dubai, you would actually see that it is not very different from the famous/infamous Hollywood depiction of concentration camps of Hitler. (100 � 150 sq feet rooms with nearly 10 � 12 workers stacked up in bunker beds, sharing a wash room that is used by 50 � 60, and with most times no air conditioning and most often not paid for nearly 6-8 months). This is just a conservative description of the workers camps or rather concentration camps of the workers who are making the �new age pyramids� of which the world can look with admiration and pride and real estate agents can sell for millions whose wall hangings would cost ten times more than the worker�s lifetime saving. And it is this helplessness and inaction of most of us including mine to being unable to do much or any to change what I behold. Rather accept that it�s happened before and shall happen now so let it be! I guess if Mosses believed in that point of view of the Pharaohs or Jesus believed in that point of view of the Romans I am sure, we would have lesser faiths on this planet. I hope my �juvenile arguments and the irrational thoughts� is more defined and if what I have tried to say makes sense then do let the American way become the Dubai way, where the people who work hard on such extreme living conditions enjoy some basic human rights. And that I respect & admire of what they do in America and give to their people and still be able to develop into a successful country. I still admire and take pride in the beauty of all the projects and buildings that is happening in this city and sure it will be a very successful city/country in another 100 years, and be in someway comparable to my country not by the yardstick of the height of the buildings but by the culture and the affection of the people that live in it.

With regard to what bewildered had to say�and I shall now try to correct my spellings & grammar even though it isn�t my �first language�. But my �inventive grammar and imaginative spelling� are not the issue here! I agree every country has had a history of abuse, subjugation and slavery, but that has been history! Today most civilized nations are trying to loose that evil past of theirs and strive towards building a more humane society. Blaming the Homo sapiens nature in general is just escapism of an irresponsible mind. And such escapism historically has shown us the atrocities on the Jews by the Nazis and I am sure Hitler would have agreed to a point of view that humans are meant to be subjugated for one�s own personal benefit and profit. But if you differ from that point of view, I am sure you would agree with me. And that will be possible only if you were to have or your countrymen were to have suffered the same plight as mine. I am not referring to any stereotyping here, but Americans have still not suffered the pain which most races and counties have. And I would only congratulate their government in being protective of their people and doing what�s best for them. But I disagree their policy of turning places like Iraq into warfronts in which they can pick and choose their (perceived) enemy rather then fighting the same war in their country. And in the process turn the people of that nation against each other there, kill as many innocent children and women, rape a few given the opportunity�and then finally divide the country into two if possible and then off course! share the spoils of war between ones allies! It�s a good strategy and it�s working very well thanks to the ignorance of the world. Fight your war in neutral or enemy territories where the children and the innocent lives lost are theirs, not ones own and the property and destruction caused is of theirs and not ones own. Every couple of weeks I visit this site hoping for new photos and to read any recent comments. I really get a kick out of some of the comments. My particular favorites are the inventive grammar and imaginative spelling. Yet the best comments are the juvenile arguments and the irrational thoughts. These really cause an amusing bafflement at how the human brain functions within some individuals. For example, one of the ongoing themes is the commendation of worker exploitation. Now I hate to state the obvious here, but we Homo sapiens have abused, conquered, subjugated, and slaughtered one another since the dawn of time. This of coarse does not validate such behavior, but no matter what country or culture you are from, unspeakable acts of atrocity have occurred there. Dubai is neither the first nor the last to face unfair labor issues. Coming down so self-righteously and hypocritically on Dubai for alleged inequitable employment practices is a little over the top. Lets gain some historical perspective here and judge accordingly. Low wages and held passports just don�t stack up to forced child prostitution, or the sectarian mass killings in Iraq. By the way, low wages is a problem everywhere and not simply in Dubai. Why is it such an outrageous act in Dubai and not elsewhere? Now I don�t mean to be an apologist for the �famous Arab slavers� according to �Guest,� but I�m tired of silly stereotypes. As an American I�m supposed to be ignorant, uneducated, and overweight, with the world hating me simply for being American. Can we try to liberate our prejudices, come to the real world, and objectively grant Dubai has done something rather incredible in a short period of time? The country, government, and people of Dubai are experiencing the growing pains that come with such rapid development. Of coarse there are problems, ethical questions, and moral issues to be resolved, but can anyone really argue that their own particular country and government are absolved from such matters? Dubai and the UAE have made extraordinary progress in 50 years. Give them another 50 and I�ll bet they will equal the advancements of countries 100�s years old.

HOWEVER, "East meets West"??! more like East meets Disneyland! or is this really how people from the East see the West? fancy malls and villas? there is so much more...you can't fake history. of course I am talking about "Falcon-city: Beyond History" (look up the project,but in a nutshell; building the Eiffel tower,Taj Mahal,the Great Pyramid of Giza etc. in one place) Burj al Arab is a great example of having a lot of money with no taste. (I am an interior designer in London) I am no tree-hugger, but all this huge buildings with aircon is no good for the environment, much less a bloody ski slope in the desert...

I am truely impressed with your photo collection of these mega projects currently ongoing in Dubai. I have many friends working in Dubai at the moment and it appears to me that the cost of living in Dubai keeps escalating yearly and rental prices are literally beyond control albeit some policies implemented by the local government. From a foreign investor's point of view, such environment does not come across as attractive & viable to a certain extent. A general illustration: People job hop for better pay because of the excalating living standards in Dubai, while foreign companies who have interest in Dubai will have to incur/build in high cost & overheads in their fees to Local Clients in order to retain their good staff. This cost is then passed back to the local Clients who has to pay high fees to bring in foreign expertise-services to help them make their product the best among the best in this competitive environment. From a macro point of view, I think the government ought to & should not overlook in establishing a structured & long term policies in order to keep Dubai self sustainable & always attractive to foreign investors. In doing so, it will bring benefits back to the locals-minorities.

If you look at their national dance itself one can see the absolute lack of culture as they dance with fake AK47'S!!! as a dance prop. i really find it amusing that these people consider themselves so elite when just a few years b4 they were just eating dates and drinking camel milk. its was that they were just lucky that they found a few barrels of oil beneath their dirty tents that now they can live in their silly villas. They should take a look at some of the houses of the pople they employ in ther home lands and they would be suprised how much better quality if life they enjo back home. Another note i would like to add on is that the world thinks that they are exploting the asians..espacially countries like INDIA..but the truth is its just the opposite! Its actually a reverse colonisation thats happening. Indians have spread though out the world and are expanding and exploding in these places and slowley they are beggening to control most of the importent positions in jobs, land etc. if this be the case now, then in another 15-20 years one can just imangine... i would like to hear the arrogant comments made by some then and hear out what they will have to say then.

I lived in the UAE for 2 years teaching. My wife (who is Filipina by the way) worked in the Burj Al Arab hotel for nearly 10 years. To sum up my limited experiece. The UAE identity is that of a curious child. They have virtually limitless resources with very lttle experience managing them. One main issue in the UAE are human rights violations. There is a clear difference between low standard of living by exploiting the third world for profit and poor economic situations in countries of origin. The difference is choice. Emirati choose to exploite these people with a deliberate decision to do so. The racial profiling that determines salary or job availability is terrible. If you are Indian, Pakistani, or Filipino expect that many jobs will not be available to you regardless of your qualifications. If you can get the said job, expect to be paid 1/3 the salary of a westerner doing the same job, and 1/6 or even 1/10 the salary of a Emirati national doing that job (often a ghost jobs as the individual may not have the qualifications to do it). The UAE is changing though. They are beginning to see a clearer picture as more are being educated abroad. They are less easily taken advantage of. Before many Emirati would rather have an empty gold plated box rather than a silver plated box filed with diamonds. They are learning to become more critical in their thinking as they have been "burned" and taken advantage of in the past. This is a good thing and I hope it continues. The are starting to look inside the box. In the schools, many education officials believed that you can spend your way into a good education system. I won't deny that this is partly true, but can create a lot of problems. Throwing money at problems does not fix problems, it just attracts wolves. Believe me, there were and still are many wolves in the business of langauge instruction trying to con their way into a piece of the UAE fat wallet. The problem in this situation was exactly as above. The idea was that if you speak English well, you must be able to teach it, or if the students like you, you must be a good teacher. Sadly, a Tunisian with 15 years experience, countless professional development seminars,lectures, extra qualifications, and a Masters degree in linguistics earns less than half that of a wweterner with a mere "cereal box" 2 week TESOL certificate and no education training (not even at the undergraduate level) or experience. Yet, more holisticly, the education system is in it's infancy like everything else in the UAE, and the learning is occurring at a phenominal rate. I believe just 3 years ago a special dirham coin was issued to commemorate 50 years of education in the country. Just look at pictures of the country from 50 years ago. It has come a long way. The next few generation will be a crutial turning point for the UAE. They will either learn to self sustain their society, or it will eventually fall apart. The vast majority of the people in the UAE are expatriots. Westerns and non gulf Muslims get by okay, so they aren't going to stir the pot too much, but they make up a small percentage of the expatriot population. They only thing keeping the majority from a massive scale revolution is the lack of power, infrastructure, and fear. On a political level, the western world is always going on about democracy. I didn't see anything democratic while in the UAE. Yet, American "freedom fighters" don't invade the UAE. They must be getting good deals on the cost of a barrel of oil. Something to think about.

Bob�.Yes they are making 140$ every month but remembers they have no bills to pay in UAE. The company that brought them is taking care of everything, food, beverage and rent. All what they do is just to send this 140$ back home. And remember they are all guys, in fact there are more than 11 millions person in gulf states, and that might cause a lot of problem for the families. We are really scared of them. Also if they don�t like they can simply go back home. And bob don�t think that we are going to give them more money, and lets assume that we pay them 1000$ without other advantages. They will end up with only 140$ .

Its like a hotel spending millions in upgrades and advertising to bring in new business. Then when people come to the hotel and make comments, the hotel manager tells them they don't have the right. �Only people working in the hotel can "interfere" with hotel business.� A responsible company welcomes praise or criticism. The information is considered and acted upon to make it a better company. I own a small business and from time to time my customers have complained. It hurts, but I learn, I make changes, and move forward. If you believe someone has made unfair or substantiated criticisms regarding Dubai, that is their right whether you like it or not. And it is your right to then engage and refute the critique. Simply say �stay out of our business� is silly. Again, you have the right to say that, but its just not very effect. Alam, what will $100 do when there are a million of them. How about persuade people not to stay in the fancy hotels or buy apartments there. If enough news gets out there'll be much less people willing to buy/stay there which means the developers won't have enough money to build their towers so then, the workers won't be able to be exploited. I've already convinced a few people not to go there by showing them the secret behind the world's fastest growing city. Dubai-Boy, what good is having millions of tourists when the whole boom isn't benefiting the residents? Another example, how does the burj dubai benefit anyone actually living in the city? Actually it seems this boom has reduced the standards of living, the rediculous rent increase is proof. UAE, I hear the "but they have a better life here than at home" excuse all the time. So if someone is treated like shit in one country, does that give another country to treat him like shit aswell, but not as bad as in his own country? Sean, modern pyramid building is exactly what this is, and btw I'm in no way gaa gaa about the pyramids in egypt. I actually wish it was never built along with any other big showoff building like this that was built with slave labour. BTW slave labour is what this is because they are forced to work with no choice in the matter. Here's why, they are promised a certain wage, when they get to dubai they find out they're actually paid 4 times less and cannot transfer jobs if they're treated like shit, also they have their passports taken away so that they can't leave.

This modern day pyramid building with the Third Country Nationals is uphauling. Living conditions and treatment of poor people by the newly oil rich states. I hope none will go to Dubai and visit because you are supporting this way of treatment of the TCN. I am from Sri Lanka and seen the treatment of my people by the middle easterners. I hope these mega projects will be a bad investment on Dubai part.

Yes the pictures are nice and very impressive but since I know how they are built they just look ugly to me so I have to agree with Bob. The camps outside the city where the workers sleep are disgusting, with up to then in a small room on wooden boards. Earning about 100 US$ a month while they were promised 200 US$ (which is still peanuts). When the workers want to go home they can�t because the building company has their passports so they are literally hostages. People should consider this before buying an apartment or booking a holiday in Dubai.

Bob you're angry. i mean i totally agree with you that many of these works work in bad conditions and they really need some support (& hopefully they will get it soon), however, Dubai's projects are very unique. i mean for a country that is less than 40 years old, you have to give Dubai some credit. london, new york, paris are all hundreds of years old, and traffic is still bad, right? FYI, 5 million people visited egypt- the whole country- in 2005, and 5.4 million people visited Dubai - the city - that same year. u think they're not doing a good job! the world disagrees.

Workers working in harmony? Yeah right, more like slave labour. Sorry but almost all these projects are crap, completely oversized, tacky, etc. and will end up as empty white elephants since only a few can afford to live in them, meanwhile the rents still rise since nothing is being built for the average dubaian. Also it seems all of these projects are made up out of malls, towers, sprawling suburbia and highways cutting through main parts of the city. All of these are unsustainable types of development so when I was there last year I wasn't one bit surprised to be stuck in traffic for 3 hours. Anyway, the projects might not be the best at all, but your photos are still amazing nonetheless. Lets hope you can get some more aerials before the palm sinks or before the million workers finally get sick of their slave treatment and go on a mass riot destroying half the city. :-)
