The four-track subway station Essen Central Station is the main crossing point between the subway and tram lines. For changing trains the two different heights are connected with stairs and ramps. The assignment of the platforms is arranged so that it can be switched in the same direction at the same platform. For convenient connections in the opposite direction you can use elevators and a bridge that spans the entire underground station.

The way from Essen Central Station to the subway leads through the so-called passerelle. The Essen Transport AG (EVAG) installed in 2009 an eighty-meter-long light installation with three thousand LED modules.
