Alpine Pukiawe

Halepohaku, Mauna Kea

Pukiawe are among the highest growing bushes on the mountainsides. Most of them are low and drab, with irregular outlines due to the ends of the branches sticking out a bit here and there. The growth habit is low and compact, in contrast to the sprawling forest pukiawe. However, this giant pukiawe near Halepohaku appears unusually rounded since the individual branches are so small compared to its overall size.
