Young Loulu

Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve

Young loulu are frequently found growing from mossy trunks. Apparently the nuts that fall on surfaces off the ground are more sheltered from pests. These young loulu are growing out of the side of a hapu'u trunk, where the nuts must have become lodged among the older dead frond bases.
