Cucurbitaceae (Gourds) - 'Anunu

Genus sicyos - A native climbing vine. They are prominent along the trail at Pu'u Huluhulu. I've heard this is sicyos macrophyllus, or perhaps a hybrid. They have a wide variety of leaf shapes and sizes. 'Anunu are doing very well at Pu'u Huluhulu. After the 2010 drought ended, and the island was soaked from autumn 2010 through spring 2011, 'anunu spring up in great quantities at Ka'ohe GMA where I had never noticed it before. I've also found 'anunu in the Waikamoi preserve on Maui, and as outplants here and there. The leaf and inflorescence shapes and sizes can vary wildly even on an individual plant.

Species on Hawai'i: alba (windward), anunu (leeward, Saddle), cucumerinus, hispidus (North Kona), macrophyllus (Kohala, Hamakua and Saddle)
