Hind's Variable Nebula (NGC 1555)

The golden star at the middle of this image is T Tauri,
the namesake of a whole class of very young, variable
stars. Only about a million years old, T Tauri is still in its
early stages of formation and hasn't quite settled down into a
steady condition yet. Since T Tauri is variable, so too is
the nebula illuminated by it, though the two don't seem
to be in synch with one another, which is a bit of a mystery
regarding this object. The nebula was discovered in 1852 by John
Russell Hind, thus explaining its name. T Tauri and the associated
nebula are 460 light years from earth.
