The Cosby area, located on northeastern side of the park, is one of the less visited areas on the Tennessee side of the park. A fine campground and some extraordinary hikes are found there. One of the better day hikes is to a stone fire tower constructed by the CCC in the 1930s and which is no longer in use. One reaches the Appalachian Trail following the Low Gap trail and from there it is a short distance to Mt Cammerer. The fire tower is perched at the end of an eroded ridge and affords a 360 degree view of the mountains and the Tennessee Valley. I first visited the tower in April of 1973 coming up the AT from Davenport Gap on a six day backpacking trip. We saw no one for the first two days. The park has far more back packers now than back then.
