Small Structure in Elkmont

During the period of extensive lumbering in the Smokys, a virtual town was created by the Little River Lumber Company in that part of the park known as Elkmont. Lumbermen and their families lived there. Deep in what is now the park there were schools, churches, doctors and even baseball fields for Sunday games. As the lumber started to play out, several wealthier individuals mostly from Knoxville, bought small plots of land and built summer cottages. When Tennessee and North Carolina began expropriating the land for a national park in the 30s, many people were granted a life tenancy, including the folks in Tremont. As the ownership of these plots eventually passed to the National Park Service that agency sought to remove the homes allowing nature to reclaim the area. The National Register of Historic Places intervened and the homes are presently in limbo until a decision is reached. Meanwhile, the 72 wood-frame cabins continue to decay and fall to ruin occasioned by the NPS’s de facto demolition by neglect.
On May 24, 2004 the Elkmont Historic District was added to the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 2004 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

A sturdy structure behind a sturdy fence. Lovely light, interesting to see the green tones of the stones. V

What a lovely place to have lived in. Sounds like the people had their own Brigadoon.

The Jake's Creek area is beautiful alright. Sadly, every year I would put off staying at the Wonderland Hotel in Elkmont thinking it would always be there. As you mentioned, it did close. The concessionaire, a very nice fellow whom I met in 1998, built a resort hotel by the same name here in Wears Valley and we have stayed there. Nice, but not the same. There is talk of rebuilding the old Wonderland.

Very nice shot of this small log cabin. Like all the green around it.

Hey Buz this one brings up great memories. Gayle the family and I have hiked Jake's Creek Many times. I remember this cabin and many others up there. This is definitely a hall hanger. The lighting on the cabin and the stone wall are awesome. It looks likes some clearing of underbrush has occurred since we were last up there. Great shot.

A beautiful capture of one of my favorite areas, Buz. We stayed in the wonderful old wooden hotel in Elkmont the year it closed. Such sorrow to lose that area.
