Remanants

near Akanthou, northern Cyprus view map

I was quite unprepared for the site of so many abandoned and ruined churches in the Turkish-controlled north of the island - I appreciate the sensitivities surrounding what happened 37 years ago and that both Turks and Greek Cypriots have not forgotten what took place, but seeing so many little churches dotted all over the countryside, neglected and left to go to seed was sad.

This is Panaghia Pergaminiotissa church, half-way between Kyrenia and Dipkarpaz - a lovely little simple church but locked so I couldn't sneak in for a look

Fascinating, so small and so complex. Too bad it's being neglected.
