I took Janet Rathjen to mainland Florida on May 26-29, 2017 to help her get the breeding Florida specialties that she was missing. We didn’t have time to bird the Keys on this trip and this was also not a good time for Carribean vagrants as we did not see any of them. The main one we targeted unsucessfully was the Smooth-billed Ani (Storm Water Treatment Areas 5&6). I did locate Mangrove Cuckoo (Black Point Park & Marina), Snail Kite (Storm Water Treatment Areas 5&6), Short-tailed Hawk (Storm Water Treatment Areas 5&6), Limpkin, Gray-headed Swamphen, White-winged Parakeet (42nd Ave.), Nanday Parakeet (Delray Beach), Florida Scrub-Jay (Johnathan Dickson State Park), Common Myna, and Shiny Cowbird (Noble Hill Rd.) for her. A big bonus bird was my ABA Purple Sandpiper (Lighthouse Point Park & Jetty). We did also see Gray Kingbird but Janet had already seen that species. We dipped on an Arctic Tern (Lighthouse Point Park & Jetty) that had been reported near where the lingering Purple Sandpiper was, Red-whiskered Bulbul, and Spot-breasted Oriole. Locations birded were Storm Water Treatment Areas 5&6 (Hendry County), Lighthouse Point Park & Jetty (Volusia County), Snook Islands Natural Area, Green Cay Wetlands and Nature Center, Wakodahatchee Wetlands, and Delray Beach (Palm Beach County), Johnathan Dickson State Park (Martin County), Chapel Trail and Noble Hill Rd. (Broward County), 42nd Ave., Black Point Park & Marina, and Brewer Park (Miami-Dade County).
