With the exception of taking the hiking trail to the White House Ruins, a visit to the canyon can only be done with an accredited Navajo guide or national park ranger. As we decended along a rough road into the canyon, our guide, David, explained to us that Canyon de Chelly is actually two canyons. Chelly is in the south fork and Canyon del Muerto (Canyon of the Dead) lies in the north fork.
