HMS Belfast

HMS Belfast served throughout the Second World War, playing a leading part in the destruction of the battle cruiser Scharnhorst, and also the Normandy Landings.

In service with the Royal Navy until 1965, she was saved for the nation in 1971 as a unique reminder of Britain’s naval heritage.

As a radio engineering type in the RN (Fleet Air Arm) - I don't know much about big guns (anything over 6in!). However, I often see the word 'breach' used in gun terminology, whereas I though it was spelled as 'Breech'. But, I've now been told that on a manually loaded gun it's called a 'breach' and in a power-assisted loading mechanism it's then called a 'breech'. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks. Why the midbarrel is 3 or 4 calibers aft with respect to the sides barrels on the 6" Belfast naval gun turrets?
