Medias

Constructed in 1855, the walls of this synagogue are painted with vibrant, still-preserved murals. Scattered throughout the entryway, main hall and piled in cabinets are moth-eaten tallis (prayer shawls), 100-200 year old prayer books, tefillin (small leather boxes containing texts from the Hebrew Bible that traditionally are worn on the head and left arm of Jewish men during morning prayers) and velvet embroidered tallis and tefillin bags. Negotiations are currently underway between the British-based Mihai Eminescu Trust foundation and the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania regarding a long-term and high-quality restoration project. Located 50 meters from the train station and directly on the walls of the old town, the building could be integrated easily into the tourist landscape.
