Pele's Chair is a lava formation on the windward side of Oahu that can be seen from the highway. The formation resembles a "chair" and one story is that is from here that the goddess Pele left Oahu. From the parking lot a paved road leads up to an observation point, passing the path down to the Makapu'u Lighthouse (behind a locked gate). Whale watching is popular as they pass here in their migration route. From the top there are beautiful view of Makapu'u, the well known body surfing beach and two small islands. Further up are WWII bunkers the James Jones, author of From Here to Eternity, helped build.
