I have been there both in December and later in May. I believe any later in the summer than may and it really starts raining a whole lot, so the best time to go is probably November-April. It really is a great place and I hope to be able to go back with much more experience some time in the next year. Plenty to shoot there. Definitely use for both wide angle and telephoto, because there are some very nice scenes and a huge abundance of nature. In terms of gear advice i would advise that the inside of the rainforest is a very dark and damp place, so in order to get a high shutter speed it would really help to have F2.8, or at least F4 lenses, and perhaps an external flash. Also be prepared to use a fairly high ISO. A tripod, or at least monopod, will help a lot with stability. I really loved my tripod on the second trip. The volcano pictures are 30 second exposures, and would have been impossible without the aid of the tripod. Last, be prepared to have a lot of fun, it really is a beautiful and vibrant place, definitely take the time to soak it all in while you are there, but above all, DON'T DRINK THE WATER is not a joke in Central American countries, i got really sick after my second trip, but its such a beautiful place i would go back any time.
