This is a collection of temporary public art installations that are part of Vancouver Sculpture Biennale 2005-2007 "Open Space". As of July 2006, 22 public art sculptures representing 11 nations have been installed along Coal Harbour (8), English Bay (5), Granville Island (2), Vanier Park (2), Kitsilano Beach (2), VIA Rail Central Station (1), Queen Elizabeth Park (1) and UBC Botanical Gardens (1). The photographs in this gallery are a collection of my work, completed between October 2005 and July 2006. I have also included images of sculptures and permanent installations that sit in the vicinity of those temporary installations, but are not part of "Open Spaces".
In terms of post-processing, I chose to convert most of the images into duotone, using pure Black and Pantone 871 C. As most of the sculptures already have copper and silver tones, these pictures should show well on Kodak's ENDURA metallic paper. The reason for performing duotone conversion was to unify the portfolio and to create more visceral impact. I kept the other images in Adobe RGB (1998) colour space to show the dramatic colours of sunset in three seasons. As a final note, in keeping with my philosophy that the camera, not software, should capture my point of view, most of the images went through minimal post-processing, except when necessary. Photoshop tools most used were horizon levelling (using measure tool), perspective correction, unsharp masking, channel mixing (to produce the best B&W) and duotone conversion (applying the zone system).
Hope you enjoy this gallery, and please don't hesitate to leave me comments, suggestions, et cetera, via email at wting74@gmail.com ~ William (July 2006)
