This is the fabled morning flyout at Bosque Del Apache. This is just one flock among thousands of Snow Geese that upon an unheard signal suddenly takes off en masse from the nightly roosting ponds along the Rio Grande River. The first indication that that flyout is about to begin is the gradual crescendo of cackling and honking that reaches a fortissimo note just before hundreds of wings begin to flap all at once and the swarm rises from the pond.
The sun has yet to rise over the San Pascual Mountains, but has created an intense glow in anticipation of dawn.
I prefocused the manual focusing lens, and triggered a camera-mounted SB 800 flash unit to gain a brighter view of this pre-dawn ritual. The vanguard of this flock was headed right over my camera location and barely above my head.
