Picasso Two Sisters (The Meeting) 1902.jpg

St. Petersburg, Russia

The dynamic poses of the two "sisters" and their apparent shared sadness and mutual comforting is captured in this important "Blue Period" work by Picasso. You can barely see a small child at the mother's breast. Does this image merely depict its original inspiration, a prostitute meeting with a nun in the Saint Lazare prison hospital in Paris? Or has Picasso magically transformed this into every mother's sorrow, with even a hint that this could be the Virgin Mary, who also may have sought solace at times?
