This royal crown probably dates from the 13th or 14th Century, and was said to be the 11th Century crown of Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachus who delivered it to his grandson Vladimir Monomakh of Kiev, thereby conferring the legitimacy of the Holy Roman Empire on the Russian monarch.

The crown is made of sable and precious stones set in gold. This crown adorned every royal head during coronations until 1682.
