Cathedral of the Assumption.jpg

Kremlin, Moscow, Russia

This is the oldest and largest of the Kremlin Cathedrals. It is the only cathedral that the Kremlin allows tourists to enter at present, and it is filled with traditional Russian religious icons, carved doors and other religious symbols.

It was built on the spot where Ivan I built the first Kremlin cathedral in 1330, when Moscow became the seat of Russian Orthodoxy. Ivan III (the Great) razed the earlier cathedral and hired Alberti Favoranti to construct the new cathedral, which he completed in 1479, after only four years of work.
