Russia's most famous architectural creation, St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, rises with its multi-colored onion domes near the Moscow River.
To the right of the church in the image (though not visible) is the wide avenue that carried the Soviet missles, tanks, artillery pieces, and parading soldiers past the Cathedral and into Red Square. The parade then went past the reviewing Soviet leaders who stood atop the Lenin Mausoleum that adjoins the Kremlin wall. If you were a major Soviet leader, it was not a good sign for your career (or your life) if you should miss a May Day parade.
