On 12 November 2010, we made a trip to West Baden and French Lick to celebrate Judy's birthday. Back-in-the-day, when I was nearing the end of my high school days, our prom was held at the French Lick Sheraton Hotel (as it was known back then). That evening we had a caravan of cars traveling some 75 miles for our high school to French Lick. The hotel served a very good meal that evening. Judy was my date, four years later we were married. Our trip on the 12 November 2010 was somewhat a trip down memory lane. However, both this hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel fell into ruins several years after our prom in '61 and sat unused for many years. The roofs were falling in and it seemed such a shame when we visited the area during the '80s. With the introduction of casino, gambling in Indiana the affluent Mr. Cook, of Cook Pharmaceutical, Bloomington, Indiana, pulled together a group to maintain, restore and rebuild the area hotels as a resort and casino.. These hotels are only one mile apart, the one in French Lick built, in 1901, followed by West Baden in 1902. This West Baden hotel boasted a six-story atrium among other extraordinary architectural elements. The hotel is honored as a Notional Historic Landmark and has been restored to recapture its status as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” The French Lick Springs Hotel and French Lick Resort Casino opened together on November 3, 2006. West Baden Springs Hotel reopened as a luxury hotel in May 2007, 75 years after it closed.
