Split, Croatia

Encompassing 17 centuries of history, Split is the heart of Dalmatia and is the largest Croatian city on the Adriatic coast. The city's most famous monument is the 4th century palace complex Diocletian built for his retirement. After the 7th century, over time the people built an entire city within the palace walls, including houses, churches and municipal buildings. Split has endured many rulers over the centuries: Byzantine administration, Croatian monarchs, the Franks, Vemetian rule and as part of teh Austro-Hungarian Empire. Through all the turmoil, its magnificent cultural heritage has survived to be enjoyed today.
