Dried hibernaculum

This hibernaculum is finished. The Viceroy caterpillar is visible where the nest appears to have separated. The leaf has been secured to the tree with silk so it won't fall off during the winter. Once spring arrives and the tree puts on new growth, the caterpillar will begin to feed again and pupate. A butterfly will eclose after a couple of weeks.
