Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1533 as the second Spanish city in Colombia. Owing to it's natural harbor, the city became one of the most important port cities for the Spanish colonies in South America. After it's hay days in the 18th Century, the fortified Colonial center was somewhat forgotten until the 1960s when the citizens decided to renovate the city. Nowadays, the walled-in city (ciudad amurallada) is a magnificent and very romantic example of Spanish Colonial architecture. Cartagena de Indias is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
