I grew up in this area living in Regent Road, opposite Albert Road only a few houses up. It was a lovely area when we moved here in 1973. The yellow van shown belonged to Mr Peterkin which is standing outside his iron mongers and plumbing shop. Mr Peterkin was a well known person in the area but sadly passed away about 5 years ago. Shop across the road with blue van outside became Sidhu Wines run buy Tarsem Singh and wife for over 2 decades. Mr Singh passed away last year. The shop in the foreground was Sall Foods for many years now Toor Foods. Amazingly looking very similar. Very fond memories here but seems to be a bit run down now. Brilliant photo. Thanks for trip down memory lane Mr Berry

I was born in 1941 in New Oscot Brum--but for 2yrs from 1948, we lived in Farnham Rd which is a side road behind the photographer---back a couple of hundred yards I think. I remember Rookery Road well, out shopping with mom and 3 sibblings , one in the pushchair. There seemed to be more trees then and It always seemed sunny. Judging by the layout of the buildings in this photo, there hasn't been any road realignment or widenning. It's just as i remember it with aphazard clusters of building styles of different periods. What was the name of the cinema-The Rookery? long gone I suppose. We used to tear out of it on saturday mornings aping the heroes on screen--slapping our sides pretending to be Hoppalong Cassidy or some such. Occasionally, we would venture out by trekking up the hill and shop in Soho road---much changed I hear. Rfer.

my family owed the greengrocers shop opposite in the 70s and 80s i grew up here

shops are all modern now, and road is soo much more busier but amazing how traffic was so low in those days, when we contrast it with now.

i guess my memories of growing up there at the time were correct in that regard.

I was also a patient of Nordon and Price Dental surgery, Old man Price did some fine work on my pegs. Christine was his nurse in those days, Maxine, one of the recepionists came to be quite a long stander right up to 2005ish

I was born just round the corner from here in Hamilton Road in 1938. Just opposite this shop were the greengrocers and butchers where we were "registered" for rations during the war. I well remember queueing there with my mother for our weekly rations.

This view is from Westbourne Rd looking towards Albert Rd,the"Phillips" sign would have been the location of the bike shop, had a new bike in 66 paid for at 2/6 a week so I could travel to Handsworth Tech. , the corner with the "yellow imp" was the location of Vic's grocery shop, worked there for 2 yrs 70/71,15 shillings for Fri. night and all day Saturday
