Brookvale Park

Erdington, Birmingham

Brookvale Park is basically a large lake with a small island in the
centre, originally serving as a reservoir. A footpath in a variable
width grass verge surrounds the lake. It runs the length of George
Road, Erdington, from Brookvale Road to the former M.E.B. (The
Midlands Electricity Board) but it's an empty building nowadays.

The brick-built jetty structure shown here has completely disappeared.

This park was my playground in the 60's and 70's.My mum used to swim in the swimming pool as a child and it was located on the George road side of the park i believe. My Grandmother used to tell me of how she used to go ice skating on the lake in the early 1900's as the winters were so cold the lake froze solid and all the locals went skating on the ice.The pond used to freeze when i was young and a few would venture onto the pond so the park keeper used to break the ice all around the edge so no one could go on...Do parks still have park keepers????

Keith there was once a swimming pool in the park(open air. I think this photo shows the remains of it. I am not sure when it was last used but there were stories about
the infantile paralysis scare in the l950's being the cause of it's closure.
