Angry Red Moon

Angry Red Moon

I took Bonnie out for a walk and noticed a nice Red Orange Crescent Moon. It was close to the horizon so I had to work really fast to capture it. As it was, I didnít have time to hook up the TC-80N3 remote and use mirror up. I had to take what I could get at 1 second and f7.5 (wide open) with an Orion 80ED scope. The scope was mounted on a Televue Gibralter Alt Az mount and wood tripod.

The redish/orange color is as I saw it. As far as color balance is concerned the image is unmanipulated. The color was caused by smoke at high altitude from forest and grass fires in California. I have seen and confirmed this phenomenon before. Iím in Louisiana so we are a long way from California...

The image has been sharpened and the levels have been adjusted. The image has been cropped 35% into an 8x10 format. No color or other adjustment of the photo has been made.

I was driving back from synagogue last Friday night and saw an incredible, huge, yellow-orange moon just over the horizon. It was Good Friday. I learned that it said, "The full moon came up huge and orange just after sundown on good Friday." So cool. I loved it!

I was camping out tonight and I happened to look upon the moon and realized it was Purple and Red I mean you should of seen it, it was not full but half of course and totally freaky, fog covered it and barely showed the color of it but I happened to see the color. I have no idea what is the deal with it but its totally freaky.

Tonight I saw a moon like this and was so struck by it. It was even newer than the one in this picture--the tiniest sliver of moon I think I've ever seen, and so red red red. I had never seen anything like it. I googled around trying to find any information on why it was so red. I have some minimal astronomy knowledge so I thought it must be some kind of smoke or haze, but I don't know of any local events that would be causing unusual amounts of smoke... it was eerie and enchanting all at once. I was so happy to find your photograph; it made me feel somehow that I was sharing this (for me) unique and striking experience with someone. Thanks for sharing these incredible images!
