Beginning in the 20th century, diverse artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Gertrude Kasebier, Heinrich Kuhn, Robert Demachy, and Alvin Langdon Coburn established the soft-focus canons of Pictorialism with other photographers from around the world. The historic efforts helped bring photography to the forefront as a legitimate form of art.
In recent years, contemporary photographer Elena Skibitskaya in St. Petersburg, Russia, has expanded upon this history. Through unfailing and persistent labors and explorations, she has grown to understand the method of pictorial subjects and style. While she could easily end her search for personal expression in its technique, her work differs in the final result. She offers the informed viewer a realm of experience and new subjects, which transcends the contributions from history.
