Windsor Ruins

12 miles from Port Gibson, MS

It is an quite an eerie sight to drive up to these ruins for they're found somewhat in the middle of nowhere. It was worth the trip!

This grand mansion was built in 1859 by Smith Daniell who died a few weeks upon its completion. It costs a sum of $175,000 back then which would be about $3 million today. It had 25 rooms and 25 fireplaces. It was used as a hospital by the Union troops so that may explain why it was spared and survived the war.

In 1890 a guest accidently dropped a cigarette in the upstairs area and the whole place burned down. Everything was lost.

You can see the 30 ft. Corinthian columns in the 1957 movie "Raintree Country" and more recently the site is featured in "Ghosts of Mississippi."
The Daniell family donated the mansion to the state of Mississippi.
