Standing on the James Rumsey Bridge and looking out over the Potomac River, in the distance is the Norfolk and Western Railroad trestle. This railroad was the successor to the Shenandoah Valley Railroad.
The tall monument to the right is in Shepherdstown, WV and is dedicated to James Rumsey, inventor of the steamboat. (20 years before Robert Fulton.)
The stone piers next to the trestle are the remains of the Potomac Bridge, a covered bridge built soon after the canal was built. The Confederates burned the bridge in 1861 after leaving Harpers Ferry.
The next set of piers is the rebuilt Potomac Bridge which was washed away in the great 1936 flood.
