In the background: Abram's Delight is the oldest home in Winchester. The present stone structure was built in 1754 by Isaac Hollingsworth, a son of Abraham.
The Hollingsworth family had Union and Confederate soldier guests during the Civil War. Local tradition says Mary Hollingsworth acted as a male spy for the Confederates. After the war she applied to the Southern Claims Commission for financial relief due to damages done to her home but was turned down. The committee believed she profited from the "fortunes of war," not suffered.
The huge apple in the foreground is the winner of a local contest to raise money for local chariities. Walk the streets of Winchester and you can see many other decorated apples. Winchester has long been famous for its apples.
