Valley National Bank/Consolidated National Bank Mural #2

2 E. Congress St.

After reading an article in the "Arizona Daily Star" by Joe Burchell on 26 March 2005 about some historic murals being removed from the walls of the now Chase Bank (formerly Valley National Bank), I decided to visit the bank. While I was there, bank officials were bringing out the stored murals from the vault on the second floor and clearly had plans to put the murals back up on the walls as soon as possible. Outraged citizens had been calling about the removal of the murals.

This beautiful bank building was built in 1929 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Part of this recognition apparently came from having these murals on the wall as they depict westward expansion and early life in Tucson. The artist's name was incorrectly given as Anthony Heinsbergen. Two artists, Ferdinand Burgdorff (1881-1975) and Sheridan Oman, painted the murals. Somehow the National Register of Historic Places had incorrrect information on the murals' history.
Chase Bank spokesman assures everyone that the murals are all going back up on the walls and that they are being stored at the bank until they can figure out where they will be placed. Meanwhile, you can visit the bank and see the murals and see this historic and beautiful bank building.
