A 2000 foot deep canyon, the Salt River Canyon is often called Arizona's mini Grand Canyon. Route 60 winds through this spectacular and historic area on the way to Globe. In the 1800s Apaches used to hide in the hills from the pursinig U.S. cavalry.
Nowadays, the river provides a border between the San Carlos Apache Reservation to the south and the White Mountain Apaches to the north.
