A mural depicting Charles Lindbergh holding the "Spirit of St. Louis" in his hand is on the wall of the Commuter Terminal at San Diego International Airport. The mural was done by John Whelan.
Lindbergh came to San Diego and commissioned Ryan Airlines to build him an airplane that would allow him to fly non-stop from New York to Paris. Lindbergh departed San Diego from this airport in his new plane bound for New York and history on May 10, 1927.
