Common: The Peloponnese or Peloponnesus is a large peninsula in southern Greece, forming the part of the country south of the Gulf of Corinth. It is also a periphery of Greece, consisting of 5 prefectures.
Geography: The Peloponnese covers an area of some 21,549 km² (8,320 square miles). It constitutes the southernmost part of mainland Greece, although technically it is an island since the construction of the Corinth Canal in 1893. It has two land connections with the rest of Greece, a natural one at the Isthmus of Corinth and an artificial one in the shape of the Rio-Antirio bridge (completed 2004).
The peninsula has a mountainous interior and deeply indented coasts, with Mount Taygetus its highest point. It possesses four south-pointing peninsulas, Messenia, the Mani Peninsula, Cape Malea (also known as Epidaurus Limera), and the Argolid in the far northeast of the Peloponnese.
Two groups of islands lie off the Peloponnesan coast the Argo-Saronic Islands to the east, and the Ionian Islands to the west. The island of Kythira, off the Epidaurus Limerapeninsula to the south of the Peloponnese, is considered to be part of the Ionian Islands

Allgemeines: Vom Festland ist der Peloponnes über eine schmale Landenge von ca. 6,3 km, den Isthmos von Korinth, zu erreichen, der jedoch 1893 durch den Kanal von Korinth durchbrochen wurde. Dennoch ist der Peloponnes keine Insel, weil der Kanal ein künstliches Bauwerk ist, daher kann man auch nicht von einer Insel sprechen. Seit 2004 ist der Peloponnes auch durch eine 2,2km lange Brücke zwischen den Orten Rion und Antirion mit dem Festland verbunden.
Herkunft des Namens Peloponnes: Der Name ist hergeleitet von der mythologischen Gestalt Pelops, der ein Sohn des sagenhaften Königs Tantalos gewesen sein soll.Im Mittelalter war für die Peloponnes auch die (italienische) Bezeichnung Morea (frz. Morée) geläufig.
Geografie: Der Peloponnes ist der südlichste Teil der Balkanhalbinsel und somit das am weitesten ins Mittelmeer hineinragende Gebiet. Der südlichste Punkt des Peloponnes ist Kap Malea. Im Osten wird der Peloponnes von der Ägäis und im Westen vom Ionischen Meer begrenzt.
Erdgeschichtlich betrachtet, war der Peloponnes ursprünglich eine Insel, wurde jedoch dann im Laufe der Zeit durch die Nord-Verschiebung der afrikanischen und saudiarabischen Platte an das Festland herangedrückt. Deutliche Spuren davon sind anhand der zahlreichen, geologisch gesehen relativ jungen, Faltengebirge zu erkennen. Diese spalten sich zahlreich auf dem Peloponnes auf und geben der Landschaft ein charakteristisches Bild. Vor allem im Zentralpeloponnes (Arkadien) ist die gebirgige Gegend schwer zugänglich und gekennzeichnet durch oberirdische abflusslose Becken (Poljen), in denen z.T. Seen entstanden. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist der mittlerweile verlandete Stymphalische See. Die Gebirge erheben sich auf dem Peloponnes in eine Höhe von bis zu 2400 m, die dazwischen liegenden Täler zeichnen sich für griechische Verhältnisse oft durch große Fruchtbarkeit aus.
Da die Verschiebung der Platten weiterhin anhält, ist der Peloponnes neben Italien zu den erdbebengefährdetsten Gebieten Europas zu zählen.
