Kecskemét lies in the middle of the sandy plain between the rivers Danube and Tisza, and equidistant (85 km in each case) from Budapest in the north and Szeged in the south. With its population now in excess of 105.000, Kecskemét assumed the status of principal town in the county of Bács-Kiskun back in 1950.
