Steve Long, RPCV Zambia - malaria and stroke victim.

Steve Long was a Peace Corps volunteer who went to Zambia in 2000 teaching small scale farmers how to build fish ponds and raise tilapia. After his Peace Corps commitment was over, he stayed in the village, married a local woman and adopted the local lifestyle and economy. Thus he has little money, but recently contracted malaria followed two weeks later by a stroke that left him largely paralyzed. He was taken to the hospital in Kasama, Northern Province, Zambia, where he was reduced to a “skeleton with skin pulled over it, barely able to eat liquid nutritional supplements that the hospital itself could not provide. He was discharged from the hospital when their very limited resources were no longer able to further assist his recovery. He was taken to his brother-in-law’s house in Kasama without the medical needed to fully recover, if he survives.

Steve has children in the US from a previous marriage and one of his sons, Marc Long, would like to bring his father back to the US for treatment, but medivac costs are staggering. Neither Marc nor the rest of Steve’s US family can afford these costs, but perhaps with donations, a way can be found to get Steve to a better hospital in Zambia or elsewhere in South Africa until he can sufficiently recover to fly to the US commercially. Donations may be sent to:

Marc and Kerri Long
116 Cityside Dr
Wayne, NE 68787
USA

Or you can use PayPal to send donations to their e-mail address which is:

If you have enough air miles to bring Steve to the US from Zambia, please let Marc know that as well. If you have any contacts in Zambia or Southern Africa who might be able to help Steve and his family in Zambia in any way, fiscal, medical or otherwise, please also let Marc know that as well. Thank you for any support you can give Steve.
